“Pushing the boundaries of good taste.”
Contraband TV is a sketch comedy program that aired on local access TV in Oxnard, California in 2008. The show is a mix of fake movie trailers, hilarious music videos, and patented “Short Shorts” (short sketches staring the show’s creators). Originally created by Ernie Vasquez, Gustavo Lopez, and Christian Chavez, the show found a new home online when the material was deemed “too ballsy” for TV.
With the addition of Jose Fortanel in 2009, and guest stars like Chuey Martinez (MTV3) and Crash Barrerra (Mun2), the show spawned 3 episodes and was even pitched to Mun2 Television for development!
Watch all three episodes of Contraband TV now online! From the early days of “what the hell were we thinking?” to the latest episode which we still ask “what the hell were we thinking?” Then go beyond Episode 3 and explore all our parodies and sketches!
Behind the Scenes
Contraband TV began as an experiment for an internship class at Oxnard College. The first episode premiered in front of a live audience and a laugh track was recorded. The following year, Episode 2 premiered at the Plaza Cinemas 14 in Oxnard.
The show won Best Comedy two years in a row at the Oxnard Independent Film Festival. In 2010, the creators of Contraband were invited to formally pitch the show to executives at Mun2 (now NBC Universo). Gustavo, Jose, and Ernie later went on to work on “Fugitivios de la Ley: Los Angeles” for the network.
